For example, they may contact you by letter before following up with an email, phone call, or text message.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you think you\u2019ve been contacted my HMRC but aren\u2019t sure if it\u2019s genuine, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/check-genuine-hmrc-contact-that-uses-more-than-one-communication-method#:~:text=HMRC%20may%20contact%20you%20by%20email%20and%20letter.,ask%20you%20to%20contact%20us\">use this link<\/a> to see different the communication methods for each HMRC contact, and what kind of things they would and would not ask you. .<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tax Rebates<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most popular HMRC scams used by fraudsters is to claim that you are due a tax rebate, and ask you for your bank details or other personal or financial information so that your refund can be processed. In the 12 months to 31<sup>st<\/sup> July 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/scams-warning-as-self-assessment-customers-targeted#:~:text=Filing%20early%20can%20also%20help,involved%20fake%20tax%20refund%20claims.\">HMRC received<\/a> over 170,000 scam referrals, with 47,000 of these reports involving fake tax refund claims.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you receive an email or text from a number claiming to be HMRC promising a tax rebate, don\u2019t click on any links that have been sent to you and don\u2019t disclose any personal or financial information.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you do think you\u2019re owed a tax rebate, you can check by following the steps on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/claim-tax-refund.\">government website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Might HMRC Ask Me?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HMRC may call you about any outstanding tax bills and may use automated messages, but they will always include your unique taxpayer reference number.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They will never ask you for your personal or financial information by email or text message, such as bank account details or passwords.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tax Deadlines<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to remain particularly vigilant around looming tax deadlines. T<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingstandardsecrime.org.uk\/news\/dealing-with-hmrc-phishing-and-tax-scams\">he National Trading Standards eCrime unit<\/a> has confirmed that there is an increase in fraudulent tax phishing emails from fraudsters claiming to be HMRC \u00a0around tax deadlines. These fraudulent emails may attempt to steal money from you, persuade you to send money, or gather your personal information for identity theft.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HMRC calls on Self Assessment customers to remain particularly vigilant regarding scams, due to fraudsters claiming to be from the department.
