The amount you pay will depend on the age of your vehicle, the type of fuel it uses, and its CO2 emissions or engine size.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By law, you must have valid road tax to drive on a public road in the UK. There are some exemptions, such as if you are taking your vehicle to a pre-booked MOT test or if you have declared it SORN\u00a0 (Statutory Off Road Notification).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the DVLA system flags up your vehicle as being untaxed and is not declared SORN, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/vehicle-enforcement-policy\/dvla-enforcement-of-vehicle-tax-registration-and-insurance-offences\">you will face a fine.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can find out more about the consequences of driving an untaxed vehicle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redstareducation.co.uk\/blog\/car-tax-explained\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes to Road Tax<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Road tax was recently changed on 1<sup>st<\/sup> April 2025, meaning you might be paying more this year than you did previously.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rac.co.uk\/drive\/advice\/buying-and-selling-guides\/car-tax-bands-explained\/\">standard cost<\/a> of road tax in 2025 is \u00a3195 for cars registered from 1<sup>st<\/sup> April 2025, where it was previously \u00a3190.\u00a0If your vehicle had a list price over \u00a340,000 when it was first sold, you might also be liable for the luxury car tax fee, which is a supplement of \u00a3425 annually (previously \u00a3410).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the main changes with road tax is to electric cars. Previously, electric vehicles qualified for free road tax but this is no longer the case.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another major change is to vehicles with low CO2 emissions of 0-100g\/km. These vehicles will now pay \u00a320 per year, whereas previously, their road tax was free.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rest of the road tax bands have either increased by \u00a35-\u00a320 or stayed the same.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finding Your Road Tax Band<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you wish to find the tax band for your vehicle, you need the year of your car\u2019s registration. You can check that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webuyanycar.com\/free-car-check\/what-year-is-my-car\/\">here<\/a> or by using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocheck.co.uk\/Article\/RegistrationPlates\">this guide<\/a>.  Once you know the year your car was first registered, you can find the specific tax band for your vehicle, and the cost attached to this.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do I Need to Do Anything?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you pay your road tax by direct debit each month, the adjusted amount will have been taken out since April 2025.
