{"id":1678,"date":"2024-12-20T13:55:18","date_gmt":"2024-12-20T13:55:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.redstarwealth.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1678"},"modified":"2024-12-20T13:54:09","modified_gmt":"2024-12-20T13:54:09","slug":"waspi-women-denied-compensation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.redstarwealth.co.uk\/blog\/waspi-women-denied-compensation\/","title":{"rendered":"WASPI Women Denied Compensation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WASPI women affected by rises to the State Pension age have been denied compensation this week.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WASPI<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) campaign group have had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waspi.co.uk\/please-sign-our-petition-100000-signatures-means-we-will-be-considered-for-a-debate-in-parliament\/\">petition<\/a> open since November, calling on the Government to compensate WASPI women who were affected by the State Pension age changes and the failings in communication around it.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Background<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1995, the Government announced plans to gradually raise women\u2019s State Pension age from 60 to 65 to match men\u2019s, which was to take place from 2010-2020.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2010, this timeline was expedited, meaning women born in the 1950s faced delays in accessing their State Pensions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waspi.co.uk\/background-information\/\">WASPI<\/a>, \u201c3.8 million women have been hit particularly hard\u201d and some women have seen a 4, 5 or 6 year increase to their retirement age without knowing about it.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PHSO Investigation<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/6761435126a2d1ff18253409\/government-response-to-the-parliamentary-and-health-service-ombudsmans-investigation-into-womens-state-pension-age-and-associated-issues.pdf\">Parliamentary Health Service Ombudsman<\/a> (PHSO) investigated complaints from women born in the 1950s that the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) failed to provide them with:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><em>\u201caccurate, adequate and timely information about changes to the State Pension age and the number of qualifying years needed to claim the full rate of the new State Pension and the number of qualifying years needed to claim the full rate of the new State Pension\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0In March this year, the PSHO published a <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/6761435126a2d1ff18253409\/government-response-to-the-parliamentary-and-health-service-ombudsmans-investigation-into-womens-state-pension-age-and-associated-issues.pdf\">final report<\/a>, where they stated maladministration from the DWP was found in two respects:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DWP did not take sufficient account of the need for individually tailored information when making decisions about next steps in August 2005<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DWP did not act quickly enough on a November 2006 proposal to write directly to women affected by changes to the State Pension age<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The combined result of these failures led to a 28-month delay in mailing to women born in the 1950s about the rise in State Pension Age.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Government Response<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The PHSO called for the Government to provide compensation for those affected. However, despite acknowledging and apologising for the delay in writing to the affected women, DWP does not accept that any compensation should be paid. They have stated that \u201cthe PHSO\u2019s conclusions are insufficiently reasoned and illogical, and we therefore reject the finding of maladministration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, they state that the PHSO have not necessarily \u201cproperly reflected the evidence that only 1 in 4 people recall and read unsolicited letters.\u201d Essentially, they reject the belief that sending those letters earlier would have significantly impacted whether women knew that their State Pension age was rising or given them more opportunity to make informed decisions, because not everyone will have read the letters sent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Government has stated that a blanket compensation scheme could cost up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/response-to-phso-report-on-communication-of-changes-to-womens-state-pension-age\">\u00a310.5 billion<\/a> which \u201ccannot be justified\u201d when there is evidence suggesting 90% of women knew about the changes to State Pension age.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WASPI women affected by rises to the State Pension age have been denied compensation this week.
