In this, our 1st in a series of collaboration pieces with Travel Counsellor Dona Kirkham, we look at holiday value by comparing the costs of self catering versus options which include food and drinks.<\/p>\n

One of the first things to consider when booking a holiday is whether you want it to be:<\/p>\n

Self-catering –<\/strong>\u00a0where your meals aren\u2019t included in the cost of the holiday<\/p>\n

Bed and Breakfast – <\/strong>where your breakfast is included in the price of your hotel\/accommodation<\/p>\n

Half-board –<\/strong>\u00a0where breakfast and one other meal is included in the price of your accommodation<\/p>\n

All-inclusive – <\/strong>where an unlimited amount of meals, drinks and snacks are included in the price of your stay<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s imagine your budget sits at, say, \u00a33,000 for a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 children under age 12 at the time of travel). With this budget, you may feel that this would only allow a certain type of meal plan but it\u2019s best to look further into your options. A self-catering option may well just sit under budget, so you may assume that adding meals to this would cost the earth, but this is not always the case\u2026 and this is where the expertise of a travel professional comes in! There is no right answer of which to book- it\u2019s completely dependent on what\u2019s right for you! Keeping Your Money Secure<\/h4>\n

When going abroad, it can be a good idea to keep your money for holiday spending in a separate account. This means that if your card is ever cloned, stolen or lost, and you haven\u2019t had a chance to cancel your card before money is withdrawn from it, only a small amount of money can be taken from you. Otherwise, you risk scammers and thieves being able to access all of your money.<\/p>\n

Additionally, if your debit or credit card is lost or stolen and this is your only access to withdrawing your money, it can make your holiday very stressful. Therefore, it\u2019s also worth considering bringing more than one payment card when travelling abroad.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s worth taking these measures when going on holiday as you want to be putting your feet up and letting your hair down, not worrying about coming home penniless!<\/p>\n

Checking Conversions<\/h4>\n

If you choose to pay on card for transactions made abroad, make sure to check the card machines when the currency rate has been carried out. If you agree on a price with a store owner in the local currency, you don\u2019t want to check out your online banking only to see a bigger charge than you expected due to a poor exchange rate. The conversion charges that come with using a credit or debit card abroad can sometimes make it more expensive than paying in the local currency!<\/p>\n

If you decide to take out money in the local currency, make sure you check the conversion rate here too, as well as counting the cash that is given to you whilst you\u2019re at the till or ATM machine.<\/p>\n

It does tend to be more expensive to withdraw money abroad than at home. However, certain banks give you the mid-market exchange rate and don\u2019t charge a fee for withdrawals abroad. You can head to Which?<\/a> for more information on the best banks for spending abroad.<\/p>\n
