Trade unions speak out on behalf of their members, looking out for their members\u2019 best interests to ensure:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Safe working conditions<\/li>\n<li>Protection from workplace bullying or discrimination<\/li>\n<li>Legal protection, where staff are treated in accordance to law<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They do a variety of things, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discuss major changes like redundancy<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Negotiate things like staff pay and pension benefits<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accompany members to disciplinary and grievance meetings<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide information and guidance on work-related problems<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide legal and financial advice<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Help develop skills for members to gain better-paid jobs via training and education programmes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unions put pressure on employers to take positive action, such as raising wages, as they are a group of people working as a collective force rather than as individuals that can be far more easily ignored.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, union members in the UK receive, on average, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucu.org.uk\/media\/4834\/Factsheet-1--trade-unions\/pdf\/UCU_factsheet1_unions.pdf\">12.5% better pay<\/a> than non-union members as well as better sickness and pension benefits, more holiday, and more flexible working hours.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unions have brought <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unison.org.uk\/about\/what-we-do\/about-trade-unions\/\">significant positive change<\/a> to UK employees, including a national minimum wage, equality legislation, reduced hours in the working week, minimum holiday and sickness entitlement, and many more transformations.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joining a Trade Union<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can use the Trades Union Congress&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuc.org.uk\/join-a-union\">union finder <\/a>to find a union for you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your work has a trade union, you can speak to the trade union representative about joining. You might be able to find their contact information on the work intranet, union noticeboard, or company handbook.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Workplaces in different sectors have recognised trade unions they choose to work with so you may wish to ask your employer which one they recognise. You can choose to join a different trade union to this one, but this may mean your union has less say in any issues affecting you in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have the right to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Join or not join a trade union<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leave or remain in a trade union<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belong to a union of your choice, even if it isn\u2019t the one your employer negotiates with on pay and conditions<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belong to more than one union<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you are part of a trade union, you will pay a membership fee to help fund the union\u2019s work.
